Families of drug dependents are usually concerned about the choice of treatment program that will be the best for their patient. Usually, the medical practitioner advises you on the most appropriate approach for the patient. However, if the patient can respond well to either an in-patient or an out-patient program, here are some of the parameters that you can weigh to help you make the choice.
Convenience
If you find it a hassle to come with the patient every time he or she is scheduled to come back to the rehab center, the in-patient program might be the best. On the other hand, the out-patient program is best for people who live close to the rehab center. It may also work for families who would like to have their drug dependent family member to stay with them during the treatment.
Patient compliance
In-patient programs include the close monitoring of the patients by trained professionals. Patient compliance to the treatment is greater if the patient is staying in a rehab center. However, if the patient is strong-willed and is determined to overcome his or her addiction and can commit to staying drug-free outside a facility, he or she may be allowed to enroll in an out-patient program.
Patient isolation
One of the advantages of being in an in-patient program is that the patient's access to drugs is cut off. The patient does not get to associate with the people who have been providing him or her with the drugs. If the out-patient program is carried out in a place that is unfamiliar to the patient, it might also have the same result.
Cost
Because there are charges for using the residential services of a rehab center, the cost of an in-patient program is generally higher than the out-patient treatment.
While weighing the different benefits of each type of treatment program, remember that the goal of the treatment is to get the patient out of a drug habit. Make sure that you choose a program that will effectively help the patient overcome his or her addiction.
