How Important Is Intervention?

How Important Is Intervention?-1.jpg

Drug addiction has a number of dangerous physical, mental and emotional effects. Immediate intervention is necessary in order to save a drug addict from his or her addiction. Intervention may be done by a family member or a trained professional who knows the proper methods in dealing with a drug addict.

Helps the patient recognize the problem

One of the benefits of intervention is being able to call the patient's attention to his or her addiction. There are times that the patient's addiction starts with the use of medications that are supposed to treat some conditions. However, there comes a time that the ethical use of medications turns into drug dependence. Later, this drug dependence can turn into an addiction. The patient may or may not notice the transition from ordinary drug use into drug addiction. Through the intervention of family members and licensed professionals, he or she will be able to realize the problem.

Provides the treatment options

Once the patient has recognized the existence of a drug problem, he or she will be prepared to listen to the treatment options for his or her addiction. Although there are times that the patient might not be open to treatment and does not agree with the existence of the problem, early intervention can help the family members enlist the aid of professionals in dealing with the drug addict.

Prevents further problems

Intervention prevents other problems that may arise from the drug addiction. Excessive use of drugs can lead to behavioral and relationship problems. Mental problems associated with drug use include excessive alertness, depression or hallucination. These conditions can lead the patient to create world that is far from reality and will make the patient believe things that aren't normal. Drug addiction can also lead to physical problems including depression of body functions or excessive stress on the organs that can lead to organ failure.

Because of the importance of early intervention, if you suspect that a family member is addicted to drugs, it is necessary that you look for ways on how you can stop the drug abuse and help the patient get into a treatment program.
